Winter has been long (since last October) and hard: lots of snow and low temperatures. On top of the fact that we are Brazilians and are getting used to this type of weather, it has been particularly different for our family because our baby girl was born in the middle of it. That means we had to be more restricted to the indoors due to the cold and consequent threat of germs and flu.
However, we couldn’t miss some of what winter brings of best: skiing! Michigan doesn’t have huge slopes like other places such as Maine, Colorado, or Canada…. however, up North there is a pretty decent ski area called Springs Harbor. There is Boyne Resort and the Nubs Nob area…. The region is pretty, full of activities, with cozy restaurant and condos.
We decided we wouldn’t miss our annual Ski weekend (it’s our second time!) and headed up to Nubs Nob ski resort (http://www.nubsnob.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=71&Itemid=104) !! For beginners like us, this is more than enough!
But how to do that with a newborn? It’s a long drive (4.5 hours without stopping), it’s pretty cold and the ski area gets really busy. Indeed there is no way to do it without a sitter! And we were luck enough to have my mom over (Thanks Mom!). So in the first day she stayed with Mila at the Day lodge while mommy and daddy went skiing. They were both entertained by the movement of people and could relax by the fireplace, near the coffee shop. In the second day, grandma stayed at the very comfy condo with Mila so we could go down some more slopes!
And what about the trip? Well, Mila did pretty well. We had to stop twice to feed and change her, but that was all about it. She was so entertained with the Baby Einstein DVD’s! I highly recommend it…. she would smile at it and listen to the songs until she felt asleep! Wonderful!!
