The libraries here in the US are a good example of great use of public money. I’ve already written in the past about how cool they are, with all “free” infrastructure and books, music, videos, etc… But that is not all they offer FOR FREE. There is a full calendar of activities for all ages. There are services, there are classes, or cultural gatherings. Some people don’t even know about it, but all these activities are posted on each of the libraries websites.
For the second time, I took advantage of a great activity offered for free to the community: BABY TIME! First time I was joined by my friend Michelle and yesterday Luisa and Courtney joined me on this fun experience. We took our little ones: Mila, Antonia and Emma to meet other babies and Mrs. Kathleen, the story teller. What an amazing experience! It is a program tailored for babies 0 – 12 months and is supposed to stimulate baby’s early literacy and socialization. Babies and their parent/caregiver are introduced to engaging stories, rhymes, songs, finger plays and sign language and most importantly, get to see and interact with other babies.
Mila and her friends had such a great time! Of course she didn’t have a clue of what ‘was going on when she heard songs like “Head, shoulders, knees and toes….” or watched Mrs. Kathleen tell stories or rhymes, but she got amused by the sounds, images and the presence of other babies. She was smiling at one Japanese baby girl that was just beside us. And she loved when Mrs. Kathleen let her touch the textured book! For older babies, like 8 or 12 months it is even more fun, they crawl towards each other and like the songs so much. At the end, all babies get to play with the library’s toys.
It is also great for mommies! It’s a great opportunity to meet other women like us and talk about a lot of things or exchange experiences or just get out of the house.
So, for the ones interested, have a look at their calendar. They have free activities for everyone. The environment is awesome, super organized, clean and cozy.
In April they have so much going on, like Elmo Story Time for all ages and Yoga for Babies (that one I would really love to join!). Have a look in their website, click here
Take advantage of it! All libraries have lots going on. It is really worthwhile!
